Basis of operation. How does it work?

When a combustible surface is exposed to high heat and/or flame, the intumescent coating expands and forms a flame-imbued ash foam that expands and protects the surface to protect it against damage caused by overheating and destruction.

On the picture below is the flame retardant coating (average coat thickness is 0.7 mm) applied on a sheet of corrugated board (board is 2.5 mm thick).

After exposure, this is what the foam created due to a thermal influence of fire of a surface pained with Intumescent fire retardant looks like. The foam is usually about 35mm thick. The cardboard under the layer of protection sustained fire exposure and remained intact.

Lately industrial and commercial frame building featuring supporting steel structures has been in great demand due to construction booms across the world. Construction methods like this have advantages over traditional brick masonry, monolithic construction and other kinds and this is affiliated chiefly due to reduced construction times, reduced costs and building weight.

However, construction using these technologies require a lot of attention to the protection of loadbearing parts from corrosion, condensation and fire exposure in the event of a fire. In the event of fire, bearing metal structures are subjected to high temperatures and begin to deform. This phenomenon leads to the destruction of an entire building over a very brief period of time.

fire damage
In order to delay the building collapse due to the heat produced by the fire, it is necessary to protect metal surfaces from heat exposure. Intumescent fire-retardant properties allow it to expand under heat exposure up to 50 times. While expanding, the material forms refractory foam that has low thermal conductivity, which prevents flames and heat from reaching metal surfaces. Intumescent fire retardation material  therefore restrains the highest flame temperature up to 90 minutes. 90 Minutes could be the time it takes for fire fighting services to arrive, it could be the extra time needed for you to evacuate personnel and could be the difference between life and death before a building starts to collapse.

In light of this, MyBigNano South Africa has procured the FlameOFF Range, highly efficient retardant coatings. FlameOFF is produced in South Africa with European standards and with high-tech production standards. It should also be noted that FlameOFF fireproof composition includes nanostructured particles (nanoplatelets) of alumina and ceramics which contributes to its durability, strength and resistance to humidity.
